the parking structure at the main entrance of the mexico’s benito juarez international airport long stood as an eyesore reminding one of the city’s past utilitarianism; and, in 2014, the city government commissioned its beautification in the most cost-effective and appealing way possible. the design entails vertical, variably-spaced louvers surrounding the structure, which from the perspective of arriving cars provides a delightful optical effect of movement, while also allowing natural light and air to flow inside, which reduces the need for positive ventilation and artificial lighting. like a beacon, the façade extends approximately 10 ten meters above the original structure in an uplifting gesture announcing the visitor’s arrival to the airport. moreover, the new façade is freestanding and does not touch the current structure. This design allows the entire unit to be moved to the site of the new airport to be inaugurated early in the next decade. the individual louvers evoke airplane wings and are etched with a subtle cloud design, reiterating the themes of moving air and flight.
